As a stand-up newcomer, Hils Barker was a finalist in Channel 4’s ‘So You Think You’re Funny’ and ‘The Daily Telegraph Open Mic Award’ (2002). Since then she has gone on to write and perform in the groundbreaking sketch show ‘Radio 9’ for Radio 4 and has written and performed for BBC comedy programmes including The Message, The Late Edition and The Comic Side of Seven Days. As a stand up, she was also recently invited to the U.S. to perform on NBC’s Last Comic Standing.
She is now developing solo projects as a writer and performer, with her 2008 Edinburgh festival solo show Exhibitionist being described as “the most innovative and relevant act you’ll see this year” (Three Weeks ) and “A razor sharp wit… it’s deeply refreshing to see a comedian who’s actually got something to say. ****” (Fest).
As an actress Hils’ work includes The Message (BBC 3) and Channel 4’s Ten Years of Blair in which she voiced Diana, Princess Of Wales, Pauline Prescott and The Queen. She has also voiced impressions and characters for animations such as Celebrity High (Channel 4), Origen’s Wake (Channel 4) starring Mackenzie Crook, and characters for children’s animations such as The Wonder Pets and Level Up (CBBC). Along with David Mitchell, Leslie Ash and Neill Pearson, she was also recently in the second series of Vent by Nigel Smith for Radio 4.
In 2006 Hils co-hosted and devised along with fellow comedians Steve Hall, Josie Long and James Sherwood the regular satirical panel game show The Friday Night Bonanza at The Arts Theatre Club Soho, which was featured in The Evening Standard’s Pick Of The Week alongside The Mighty Boosh as ‘A Refreshing Change from The Norm’.
As well as Radio 9 other radio credits include The Milk Run (Radio1), 28 Acts In 28 Minutes and Serious about Comedy (BBC7). Her stand up has been featured on The Arthur Smith Lectures (Radio 2) and Spanking New On 7 (BBC7).
